Box and Whisker Diagram

The box and whisker diagram is handy graphic for summarising a set of numbers.  It displays the range through the maximum and minum values.  The central value is the median and the two boxes display the 2nd and 3rd quaritle ranges, whilst the whiskers show the 1st and 4th quartile ranges.

The graphic below is interactive and can be copied into documents which accept images (e.g. Microsoft's Words and Google Docs.

The most convenient way of obtaining the values for a Box and Whisker diagram is from the Min, Quartile and Max functions of a spreadsheet programme.
